Typical obstruction lighting for telecom/broadcast towers, lattice and steel towers
These recommendations are based on Chapter 6 of Annex 14 of ICAO (International Civil Aviation Organization latest edition) and are given for information only
1. Red obstruction light for night marking
For telecom towers below 45 meters high:
- 1 or 2 red fixed low intensity at the top
For radio or telecom towers between 45m and 105m high:
- 1 red flashing medium intensity type B at the top
- 2 or 3 red fixed low intensity type B at mid level (not more than 52 meters from top or ground level) If the tower is higher than 105 meters, additional levels of red medium intensity and low intensity lights should be added alternatively
At the bottom photocell and control cabinet in option (built-in photocell inside the flash-head can also be used)
Position | Description | Model with photocell and a controller at the bottom | |
---|---|---|---|
1 | Red medium intensity | OFC-RI-240 | |
2 | Low intensity with infrared | NAVILITE-IR-FAA-120-240V | |
2 | Low intensity basic | NAVILITE-FAA-120-240V | |
2 | Low intensity double | NAVILITE-FAA-120-240V-DUAL | |
3 | Controler (optional) | OFC-CTR-240 | |
3 | IOT controller (optional) | OBSTALINK | |
4 | Photocell for night only operation | PHOTOCELL DC |
2. White medium intensity obstruction light operating day and night for unpainted towers up to 150 meters high
White flashing lights at night are not recommended in urban area, dual color system (white flashing during day time and red at night) should be used instead
- for towers 45m up to 105m high, 1 or 2 white flashing medium intensity type A at the top
- for towers 105m to 150m high, 2 to 4 white flashing medium intensity type A at intermediate level
- for towers above 150 meters high in case of presence of red and white painted strips, additional levels of medium intensity type A every 105 meters max (high intensity in other case)
Position | Description | Model | |
---|---|---|---|
1&3 | OBSTAFLASH white medium intensity type A | OFI360-WW-240 | |
1&3 | 3 white medium intensity 120° kit | OFI120-WW-48/240 | |
4 | Photocell for day/night change of intensity | PHOTOCELL DC |
3. Dual color system white during day time and red during night time obstruction light for unpainted towers up to 150 meters high
Dual color medium systems white flashing lights during the day only and red lights during the night only are the most popular and recommended especially in urban area Same arrangement than above with dual color medium intensity type A & B + additional red fixed low intensity type B at intermediate levels in between medium intensity and operating at night only

---|---|---|---|
1&3 | Dual color medium intensity 360° | OFI360-RW-240 | |
1&3 | 3 dual color medium intensity 120° kit | OFI120-RW-48/240 | |

2 | Low intensity double | NAVILITE-FAA-120-240V-DUAL | |
2 | Low intensity 48Vdc with command box | NAVILITE-120-240V | |
4 | Photocell for day/night change of color & intensity | PHOTOCELL DC |
4. Unpainted tower higher than 150 meters
For unpainted broadcast towers that are higher than 200 meters high, there should be every 105 meters 3 high intensity type A lights installed around the tower. Those high intensity type A are normally installed on platform (if there are!) every 105m maximum. In case the top level is above 12 meters of the last platform of high intensity, an additional medium intensity type A should be installed on the top or the antenna. These obstruction lights work permanently with 3 levels of intensity varying according to the day, the twilight and the night For pylons with an antenna of more than 12m on the last platform, a medium intensity type A light must be added at the top
